Salads: Starring Summer Fruit

In 45 degree heat the only thing that sounds appetizing is a cold, crisp salad. And in an effort to make my greens more interesting, I’ve been looking to incorporate some of the luscious summer fruit available these days. Here are a few ideas I’ll be trying out over the weekend – have a good one! {Click on the names to get the recipes}

Spirited Away: Winter Cocktails

There are so many reasons I love this season – the festivities, Diwali, fall TV shows, sunshiney lunches – but one of my favorites is having people over. A group of friends, good conversation, a warm home, and cocktails. Some inspirations for this winter (click the name for recipes):

Wassail Punch

Hot Butter Spiced Cider

Apple Snowball

The Magic of Off-Season Goa

Desperately in need of a holiday and ignoring all our friends who said it would be unbearably hot and everything good would have shut down, we took a trip to Goa. And it was wonderful. Yes, a lot of our favorite restaurants and shacks were closed but we discovered so many places which we would probably ignore during the buzzy season.

Where we stayed

Down the road we discovered this eclectic concept store housed in a Portugese villa. My pick would be the beaten metal heart earrings by Amrita Hans

Le Poisson Rouge – we’d always driven past this and gone onto J&A. This time we had dinner there and it was a lovely quiet night.

A table with a natural leaf design at Sotohaus, a bright furniture, lighting, and art store.

A day at the pool, a relaxing massage at the Jiva Spa followed by Thai food at The Banyan Tree

A drive to Fort Aguada and down the winding road to the macabre jail.

Colorful printed kaftans and dresses at Turquoise & Gold

One of our favorite restaurants Fiesta was open till mid-May – the goat cheese with waffles and honey was sublime.

A sprawling cafe and boutique tucked away in Anjuna. We whiled away many hours at Artjuna reading old issues of Vanity Fair and Tatler and drinking fantastic coffee.

‘The Fine Art of Food’

From the Leela group, this book offers recipes from their impressive stable of restaurants in Delhi including Le Cirque and Megu.

Pappardelle with duck ragout and orange gorgonzola

Photographed by Rohit Chawla, the food was shot against a light-box which “brings out the circus-like colors… and recreates them in such a way that the blocks of pure color appear to hang suspended like the shapes on a mobile by Miró”, writes William Dalrymple in the Foreword.

Eggplant with sweet Miso sauce

Moving away from a traditional still-life approach to food photography, Chawla removed all the “props” and allowed the food to stand out. “The food presented in this minimalist fashion becomes colors, lines, shapes and forms…akin to a visual Haiku”, he says.

Colorful idlis

This is not an everyday food cookbook, this is glamorous food that requires lots of time, planning, and a special occasion. Till then, it remains proudly displayed on my coffee table.

Nigella’s South Indian Vegetable Curry that I made last night. Except I added prawns. I’d also recommend a little more acid, but all in all it turned out pretty well. Recipe here.

An Apple a Day…

The weather’s moody and so am I – it’s a crumble sort of day. Apple crumble with cinnamon to be exact. I’ve made this dessert many times – substituted rolled oats for flour and used more vanilla than should be allowed – and didn’t think it could get any better. Until I found this recipe. A layer of dark chocolate you say, well I never!
